Santa Clara, Calif. - To serve demand for more-cost-efficient UA-SFT-based liquid-crystal displays in industrial applications, NEC Electronics America Inc. has launched an 8.4-inch (21-cm-diagonal) thin-film-transistor LCD module.

NEC LCD Technologies' proprietary ultra-advanced superfine TFT (UA-SFT) technology is said to enable ultrawide viewing angles, high luminance, a wide color gamut and a high contrast ratio. The technology improves panel transmissivity 180 percent over advanced SFT technology and 120 percent over super-advanced SFT technology, NEC said.

The VGA LCD offers an equivalent brightness level and energy savings of approximately 45 percent over the XGA model, according to NEC. Switching from XGA to VGA also cuts the cost, and an expanded operating temperature of -10 degrees C to 70 degrees C broadens the applications range.

Luminance of the new display is 400 cd/m2; color gamut is 72 percent, which is equivalent to that of a cathode-ray tube. The module achieves accurate color reproduction even in bright environments, according to the company.

The UA-SFT technology is also credited with enabling the module's 170 degrees viewing angle (the contrast ratio exceeds 10:1) and with minimizing the color and contrast shift that can result from a change in viewing angle. The display operates in either portrait or landscape mode, for greater flexibility in viewing position, installation location and display usage.

The module measures 200 x 152 x 11 mm max. Power consumption is 5.4 watts typical, excluding power dissipation of the inverter.

Samples of the module are currently available. Sample pricing is less than $300. Volume production will begin soon, according to the company.
